Trustway Accounting Releases Guide to Common Small Business Accounting Problems

Sep 8, 2026

Trustway Accounting has published a new guide to small business bookkeeping problems, helping owners distinguish between incomplete or inaccurate books, missing financial documents, and tax questions so they can identify what needs attention before tax preparation.

-- HOOVER, Ala., Sept. 8, 2026 — Trustway Accounting has published a new educational guide to help small business owners identify whether the financial problems surfacing around tax preparation actually begin with bookkeeping, inaccurate records, missing documents, or tax questions.

The article, “Messy Records, Missing Documents, or Tax Confusion: Which Accounting Problem Are You Actually Dealing With?”, explains why several different accounting issues can appear to be one large tax problem when filing season approaches.

A business owner may discover months of incomplete transactions, bank balances that do not match the accounting records, missing receipts or invoices, or uncertainty about how financial activity affects taxes. The new guide helps readers separate those situations so they can better understand what needs attention first.

Trustway Accounting identifies four common situations in the article.

The first involves bookkeeping that has fallen behind. Financial activity occurred, but some transactions, accounts, payments, or expenses were never fully recorded.

The second involves books that appear current but contain inaccuracies. Problems such as duplicate transactions, inconsistent categories, unreconciled accounts, mixed personal and business expenses, or unexplained balances can make otherwise complete records difficult to rely on.

A third situation occurs when the bookkeeping itself may be reasonably accurate, but important supporting records are missing. Receipts, invoices, bank statements, payroll information, loan records, or other documentation may still be needed to explain or support particular transactions.

The fourth situation involves tax questions that remain after the financial records are reasonably complete and understandable.

“Tax preparation can make several different financial issues look like one tax problem,” Trustway Accounting said. “The better starting point is figuring out whether information is missing, whether the books need correction, whether supporting documents are unavailable, or whether the remaining issue is actually a tax question.”

The guide also explains that businesses can face more than one of these problems at the same time. In those cases, Trustway Accounting recommends identifying the underlying issues in a practical order rather than trying to solve everything at once.

That may mean bringing missing financial activity into the books first, reviewing the completed records for inaccuracies, identifying missing supporting documentation, and then addressing the tax questions that remain.

The article also discusses when continuing to correct the books without professional guidance may create additional uncertainty. The focus is not simply on whether someone can make changes inside accounting software, but whether the resulting financial information can be understood, explained, and relied upon.
