Slingshot Law Urges Austin and Grand Junction Drivers to Plan a Sober Ride This Holiday Season

Nov 3, 2026

Austin, Texas – Slingshot Law – Injury Attorneys is reminding drivers in Austin, Texas and Grand Junction, Colo, to plan a sober ride before holiday celebrations start. The firm, which has offices in both cities, says the stretch from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day brings more parties, more traffic and more drunk driving crashes.

State numbers back that up. The Texas Department of Transportation reported more than 2,000 drunk driving-related crashes during the 2024 holiday season, and December had the most crashes caused by drunk drivers of any month that year. In Colorado, law enforcement arrested 423 drivers for DUI during the 2024 Thanksgiving weekend enforcement period, according to Colorado Department of Transportation data. CDOT reported that 223 people died on Colorado roads in crashes involving impaired drivers in 2025 through late December.

Both states run heavy enforcement during the holidays. TxDOT’s “Drive Sober. No Regrets.” campaign and CDOT’s “The Heat Is On” campaign put extra officers on the road around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Slingshot Law is pointing drivers to the same advice state transportation officials give. Pick a designated driver before the party starts, and make sure that person is actually sober. Use a rideshare service, a taxi or public transit. Call a sober friend. If you are not sure whether you can drive, stay put.

“Every holiday season, we hear from people whose plans were wrecked by someone who decided to drive after a few drinks,” Slingshot Law said in a statement. “A ride home costs a few dollars. The crash it prevents can change a family’s life for good.”

The firm also shared steps for people who are hit by a driver they think was impaired. Call 911 and tell the officer you suspect the other driver was drinking, so it ends up in the police report. If you can do so safely, take photos of the vehicles and the scene and get the names and phone numbers of witnesses. Get checked out by a doctor the same day, even if you feel fine, since some injuries take time to show up.

Slingshot Law cautions crash victims against giving a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurance company before they understand their rights. In Texas, a bar or restaurant that keeps serving someone who is obviously intoxicated can share responsibility for a crash that person causes. The firm explains how those dram shop claims work on its website.

“When a drunk driver hits you, you end up going up against an insurance company with a lot more money and lawyers than you have,” the firm said. “That’s not a fair fight, and that’s exactly the kind of fight we take on for people.”
