Safely Storing Crypto On A USB Drive, Simple Offline Storage Guide Released

Jan 12, 2024

A new guide published by The Crypto Merchant explains how to use a standard USB flash drive for crypto storage.

Earlier this year, Chainalysis reported a record $3.8 billion stolen in cryptocurrency in 2022 - a 15% increase over 2021. With rising concerns over crypto security, The Crypto Merchant has published a guide explaining how to set up a USB drive as crypto storage.

As a leading supplier of hardware crypto wallets and other security solutions, The Crypto Merchant understands that to fully ensure the security of crypto assets traders need to invest in offline storage. However, the team also knows that for some investors a hardware wallet comes at too high a price tag - and as such, its new guide recommends using a standard USB drive.

“Online wallets can fall victim to phishing attacks, where hackers trick you into revealing your private keys,” says The Crypto Merchant. “They're also susceptible to malware attacks, granting hackers access to your computer and private keys.” Offline storage - whether a branded cold wallet or a simple USB drive - eliminates these risks, explains the report.

When setting up a USB drive for crypto storage, The Crypto Merchant recommends following three simple steps:

Formatting: To make the USB compatible to hold cryptocurrency, traders should first ensure the drive is clean of both data and malware. Next, they should format the USB, selecting the exFAT file system.

Encrypting: Newer versions of Windows allow users to easily encrypt flash drives using the BitLocker security feature, explains The Crypto Merchant, which will also provide traders with their recovery key.

Setting a Password: When choosing a password, the report recommends following standard best practices - creating a unique password consisting of at least 12 characters and combining upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters.

The guide also offers tips on securing the recovery key and provides recommendations on the leading hardware wallets from Ledger and Trezor.
