Frenchams brings indoor greenery to iconic Melbourne lobby refurbishment

Oct 30, 2026

MELBOURNE, Australia: Frenchams Group has supplied the indoor plants for a lobby refurbishment at an iconic Melbourne office address, adding living greenery to the renewed arrival space for tenants and visitors.

-- The newly refurbished lobby at 367 Collins Street in Melbourne’s CBD includes indoor planting as part of a renewed arrival space for tenants and visitors. Frenchams Group supplied the plants for the lobby, working closely with the project’s designers, fit-out company and architectural joiners, who manufactured the planter boxes.

The 1,800 square metre refurbishment was completed over six months and forms part of a broader repositioning of the building. Its centrepiece is an architectural ceiling of 3,136 aluminium tubes, more than 7,354 linear metres in total, running the length of the lobby and arrival spaces. The design draws on the peregrine falcons that have nested at the building for more than three decades.

The wider upgrade includes landscaped winter gardens, a ground floor café, new meeting suites and improved end of trip facilities. The aim is a workplace that balances functionality, wellbeing and hospitality.

Greenery has become a regular part of that brief. A 2025 review published in the journal Sustainability found that bringing nature into the workplace was linked to better employee mental health, and recommended indoor greenery such as potted plants and green walls where outdoor access is limited. Earlier research from the University of Exeter found that adding plants to previously bare offices increased productivity by 15 per cent.

Getting living plants into a premium fit-out takes planning beyond plant selection. Containers need to fit the surrounding joinery or built-in cabinetry, while still allowing access for watering, maintenance and future replacement.

One approach is a sealed pot system, where individual pots sit within purpose-built joinery under removable, suspended top plates. Mulch hides the containers, so the planting reads as part of the finished interior. Cut-out dimensions, internal depths and top plate recesses vary with pot size, so designers and cabinetmakers need to settle them with the planting supplier before fabrication.

Moisture is the other main consideration. Internal planters should be moisture resistant and sit over a drip tray, and any electrical connections need to be isolated and insulated from moisture. These measures reduce the risk of water damage to the joinery and surrounding areas.

A modular layout also lets each pot be reached for care or replacement, which makes ongoing maintenance easier in an occupied building. Plant selection depends on the available light and indoor conditions, so the planting stays in good condition long after the fit-out is complete.
