Brand Mentions in AI Search: New Guide for Local Business Owners Released

Sep 22, 2026

Profit Acuity releases a guide on how brand mentions, not backlinks, drive AI search recommendations for local businesses, citing Ahrefs research and citation patterns on Yelp, Google, and the BBB.

-- Profit Acuity has published a new guide for local business owners explaining why brand mentions, rather than backlinks, now shape whether AI systems such as ChatGPT and Google AI Mode recommend a business. The company frames this shift as one local owners cannot afford to overlook, since it changes what marketing activity actually produces results in AI search.

The guide points to research supporting this shift. An Ahrefs analysis of 75,000 brands, published in May 2025, found that brand web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility roughly three times more strongly than backlinks did, based on Spearman correlation scores. That gap suggests local businesses have spent years optimizing for a signal that carries less weight than the presence of their name across the web.

Research also indicates that AI Overviews appear for 68% of local business queries, compared with 39% for the traditional Local Pack. As AI-generated answers increasingly stand between a search and a phone call, local business owners need visibility inside those answers, along with a strong position in conventional results.

The guide defines a brand mention as any appearance of a business name on a page the business does not control, with no link required. According to the company, unlinked mentions carry the most weight with AI systems, followed by linked mentions, then directory citations that pair a business name with an address and phone number. This hierarchy runs counter to years of SEO advice that treated unlinked mentions as an afterthought.

Because of this hierarchy, the guide advises local business owners to prioritize being named on platforms that AI systems consistently draw from, including Yelp, Google Business Profile, and the Better Business Bureau. Research covering Q4 2025 found that Yelp accumulated 512,680 citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode, 3.4 times more than the second-place source, the Better Business Bureau, at 149,710. The guide points to a complete, active profile on each platform as a practical starting point.

The guide also stresses that reputation in AI search comes from independent recognition and reviews, rather than from content a business publishes about itself. This principle echoes Google's own quality guidance, which has long held that reputation is demonstrated through outside coverage and relevant reviews rather than self-authored claims. Profit Acuity positions the new guide as a resource local owners can use to act on this distinction, shifting effort toward earning mentions instead of producing more owned content.

The guide lays out specific steps local business owners can take, including auditing name consistency across platforms and building a habit of requesting detailed customer reviews. It also outlines how to track mentions over time, giving owners a way to measure progress rather than guess at it.

Profit Acuity works with local businesses to build visibility across search, video, social, and AI platforms, starting with a Precision Profit Plan built on more than 500 data points. The company measures results before recommending action and bills much of its work on performance. More information about the company is available at the Profit Acuity authority content system
